"Miss New Zealand" In Gisborne
The girl who was runner-up for the coveted "Miss World" title, Elaine Miscall of Wellington, spent a couple of days in Gisborne recently. As "Miss New Zealand", Elaine joined the ranks of other New Zealanders who have won world prominence, and showed that as well as mile record-holders, Rugby giants, Everest climbers, and other superlative representatives, this little country can also produce beautiful girls of world class. She was in Gisborne to help promote the 1964 "Miss New Zealand" contest, and came as the guest of the local Jaycees and the Waihirere Maori Club.
During her stay, in addition to enjoying Gisborne's sunshine, she attended a reception at the Maori Club's rooms in the Ritz cabaret, and a public dance in the War Memorial hall, where with the assistance of local young people she demonstrated the latest dance craze, the "Hitchhiker".
