The Poverty Bay Stampede

N.Z. Rodeo Championships

The second Poverty Bay Stampede, which ran for five days over the festive season, provided visiting and local holiday-makers with interesting and often extremely exciting entertainment, of a kind that would probably be unique in our district.

A record crowd of 4000 turned out at the showgrounds in perfect weather to witness a day of thrills and spills....the New Zealand Rodeo Championships. Winner of the premier event, the open buck-jump, was Allan Bennett, a big, tough, broad-grinning, Aussie (pictured left), who has been riding the N.Z. rodeo circuit for several years.
