Books For The English Star

The crew of the m.v. English Star, which was loading in the Gisborne roadstead prior to Christmas, received a rather unusual but very much appreciated gift from the people of Gisborne...more than 350 books and magazines.

The result of a public appeal, initiated by Mr George Hemsley, and launched by Public Relations Officer John Burland, the books were loaded aboard the vessel in a large sling, and were immediately dived on by the eager crew members.

Mr Hemsley, a former seaman himself, thought of the idea when he learned that the crew were to spend their Christmas at sea, and that they were out of reading matter.
