Election Candidates
Three candidates will contest the Gisborne seat, and two the Eastern Maori seat, in the Parliamentary elections later this month.
Mr Arnold Reedy, Eastern Maori National candidate, is a Ruatoria sheepfarmer. Educated at Ruatoria and Napier, Mr Reedy served with the 28th Maori Battalion overseas during the war.

Esme Tombleson, wife of Mr Tom Tombleson, a sheepfarmer at Rakauroa, has been the Member of Parliament for Gisborne since 1960, and will seek re-election at the National candidate.

Mr Bob MacDonald, the Labour Party candidate, is a wool classer by profession. He has lived in Gisborne for 25 years, being1 a prominent figure in local bodies for the past ten years.
Mr Alan Box, a sheepfarmer at Ngatapa, is the Social Credit candidate. He was born and educated in Gisborne, and is a returned serviceman.Mayfair Studios
Mr Steve Watene, the Eastern Maori Labour candidate, is employed as a personnel and welfare officer for the Gear Meat Company, of Petone. A member of the Petone Borough Council, he is a former chairman of the Maori Policy Committee of the Labour Party, being associated with the movement since 1934.
