Beach Time

Yes, it's Beach Time at Waikanae! It's Saturday or Sunday or any day after 5 o'clock. Grey Street is agog with Johns and Joans in shirts and shorts, on bicycles and in cars, clutching togs and towels, heading down to the sea—to the bright sun, the hot sands, and the long Pacific breakers. There, it's splash and swim, jump and dire, laugh and shout—or sit with a book, or just look—amid the never-failing attractions of one of New Zealand's finest beach resorts.

... Whether you're sunbaking or sitting, the view's always there, over the bright sands and the breaking waves, out across the bay to where Young Nick's Head lies almost hidden in the hazy distance. But if you're young enough, and keen enough, the surf will soon be calling again, and in about the time it takes to cross a street, there you are, back in the foam-flecked sea once more.

. . . But all good things must come to an end sooner or later.

Besides, where can wee Junior be all this time? He's not on the beach, or up in the drift, or the slides, or the swings.

×

... Ah! There he is, having himself a splash in the paddling pool, right by Waikanae's brand-new beach pavilion.

And talking of beach pavilions, let's get the camera lens away from the sand and sea and take a look at the official opening. (See following pages.)
