House of Earth
This is the house of earth in Hall Street, Whataupoko, which has been built by a father and son, Paul & Philip Fischbach. The earth bricks, each weighing 28 lbs, were made on the site in a special compressing mould.
Mr Fischbach senior shows how one of the heavy bricks can be held by a nail driven into it.
When a "Photo News" cameraman called, father and son were busy tacking on chicken netting ready for the plasterers.
Building has been a spare time hobby and is expected to cost a little over £1 per square foot.
