Nelsonians Honoured

Nelsonians were honoured in the New Year honours list.

Police Sergeant N. B. (Noel) Oxnam, B. E. M. This award was undoubtedly a reward for the unstinted effort that Sgt Oxnam gave in the building of Rotoiti Lodge for the use of Nelson and Marlborough secondary schools and youth groups. His was the driving force behind this great project. Since 1956 he has been stationed at Nelson and has been concerned primarily with firearm safety instruction and police in-service training in the district.

Mr D. D. (Don) Merritt, M.B.E. Mr Merritt has had a long association with the transport industry (commencing in 1930) and is managing director of Kirbys Carriers Ltd. He is the commercial road users' representative on the National Roads Board, a post he has held for six years. In his 30 years' service to rugby football, he has held all offices of the Nelson Rugby Union (including president for seven years) and is at present patron of the union. He is a life member of the union, of the Road Transport Alliance, the College Old Boys' Rugby Club, and the Nelson Bowling Club.

Mr R. A. (Ralph) Lilly, M.B.E. Mr Lilly received his award for service to music. He is head of the Nelson College music department and has had a long association with various music organisations in the Nelson district. He is chairman of the music committee of the Post Primary Teachers' Association, city organist and music adviser to the City Council, president of the Nelson Civic Music Council and Diocesan representative of the Royal School of Church Music in England. Since 1952 he has been choirmaster of Nelson Cathedral. In 1960 he was awarded a Fellowship of Honoris Causa (F.T.C.L.) by the Trinity College of Music.

Mr P. B. (Fred) Stacey, B. E. M. Mr Stacey received this honour for leadership during the Inangahua earthquake. Distribution engineer with the New Zealand Electricity Department, Mr Stacey was one of the first to be flown into the disaster area after the earthquake. He joined the department in Nelson in 1954 and for six years was electrical overseer in Palmerston North, He received his present post when he returned to Nelson in 1967.
