A Round With Keith Foxton

no. 5:540 yards An uphill Lie

The number 5 hole is a slight dog-leg to the right after playing through the gap. It is best to tee to the right and endeavour to keep to the left of the fairway to give an easy second through the gap. In this instance, however, we will assume I have sliced my tee shot and have landed on the face of the bank at the right (above). The gap is now on my left. Recalling that the fairway through the gap angles to the right, I decide to play my second over the hill, just to the right of the pine tree. If hit correctly the ball should land on the fairway on the other side.

I must first select a club with sufficient loft to clear the hill. An iron is preferable. Since I will be hitting a ball which is sitting higher than my feet, there will be a tendency to hook the shot. Keeping the weight evenly distributed at the address, I will swing firmly through the ball, using a flatter swing than normal. This will produce a slight hook which will swing the ball past the pine tree and back on to the fairway.

We continue a round of the Nelson Golf Club's course at Tahunanui, with club professional, Keith Foxton. Each month Keith will play a hole on the course and will place himself in the awkward circumstances that all golfers sometimes find themselves in. In this way Keith will be able to explain, per medium of the photographs, how to play a shot or extricate himself from trouble
