Nelson Marathon

Thirty-six runners left the starting line, but 16 of these fell by the wayside during the gruelling marathon run of a full 26 miles 385 yards last month. Winner of the event was a 43-year-old Wellington runner, J. Cook (Kapiti. club), running in his first marathon. The course was run from outside Trafalgar Park to Appleby and return. A strong wind undoubtedly tired the runners and caused so many of them to retire from the race prematurely.

First to leave were the Hutt Valley runner, G. Roughton, and the oldest contestant, 66-year-old "Robbie" Robinson.
