"Mrs N.Z." Quest Finalist

Mrs Merril Brown, who won the Stoke section of the Nelson area in the "Mrs N.Z." quest, and who subsequently won the Nelson area title, was chosen to represent Nelson-Marlborough in the final of the national contest at the provincial final in Nelson last month. St. Mary's Hall was packed to bursting point as the four finalists paraded. With Mrs Brown were Mrs Beverley Page (Golden Bay), top right. Mrs Janet Pessione (Motueka), centre, and Mrs Joan Robinson (Marlborough), right.

Before appearing before the huge crowd, however, the four contestants were interviewed individually by the judges. Mrs Brown is the mother of three children (the youngest is three months). Before her marriage she was a chiropodist. Her husband, Mr Alan Brown, is a bank accountant. She will compete in the final of the nation-wide contest in Wellington on November 20 against 12 other provincial finalists. Nelson wishes you the best of luck, Merril.

There's a certain glamour attached to the title of "Mrs Nelson-Marlborough", but it doesn't get those daily mundane household chores done. That's what we found as we called on the Brown family one morning after the contest in Nelson to record these pix of "Mrs Nelson-Marlborough" - housewife and mother.

The other pix are familiar to all women - attending to the baby, dressing the children, the ironing and getting hubby his farewell cup of coffee.
