Air Rally At Nelson

More than 40 planes from aero clubs throughout the South Island competed at the Nelson airport last month in the annual Royal New Zealand Aero Clubs' South Island rally. Nelson contestants had a very successful rally, winning two events (and the Wigram Cup), but the overall title was taken by Canterbury with three wins. Surprise of the rally was the emergence of Captain Ken Wells, master of the coastal vessel Aroha as winner of the aerobatics section. Captain Wells used his Tiger Moth in the event and outpointed D. Owen's Czech-built Zlin, an aircraft especially built for aerobatics.
