Governor-General's First Nelson Visit

The Governor-General, Sir Arthur Porritt, and Lady Porritt, paid their first official visit to Nelson last month. Their Excellencies filled a whirlwind round of engagements which took up an evening and a full day in Nelson city. In these four pages we have endeavoured to cover most of the functions attended by the Vice-Regal party.

Enthralled by the industry of Lynette Solly as she makes wool mats at the workshop of the Nelson Intellectually Handicapped Children Association, Sir Arthur stops for a closer look. With him is the workshop board chairman, Dr G. C. R. Hay.

His Excellency's first official engagement was to present shooting trophies to T. S. Talisman. He inspected the Guard of Honour (above) and then presented the trophies to Lt R. A. Kitt (left) and Petty Officer Cadet R. M. Broadhurst (below).

Sir Arthur is introduced to the model of the Trafalgar Centre by the May or (Mr Strawbridge).

Another of the range of occupations at the I.H.C. workshop which interested Sir Arthur was the making of breadbaskets. Here he stopped to watch Brian Blocksage spot-welding corners for the baskets.

In the meantime, Lady Porritt was visiting the wards. Here she chats with Leonard Rowling (Mariri). With her is ward sister, Margaret Campbell.

Sir Arthur, an eminent surgeon, seemed to relax during his visit to the hospital. Here, on familiar ground, he visited wards and various departments. He spent some time in the physiotherapy department. Here he talks to some of the patients in the warm pool.

More than layman's interest was shown by Sir Arthur as he was introduced to some interesting X-Ray results by department head Dr James Dore.

Their Excellencies wound up this very busy day by meeting the primary and intermediate schoolchildren of Nelson at the intermediate school. Lady Porritt talks to intermediate girls (above left), while Sir Arthur meets boys and girls from the prep classes of Nelson College and the girls' college, and boys of the intermediate school.
