A bright smile from Betty McLeod awaits patrons at the State Theatre. Betty, an usher at the theatre, is married, with three children, and has been at the theatre for 4½ years. Betty is a keen knitter and while her family and job keep her fairly busy, she likes to go motoring in whatever spare time she has.

The backroom boy at the State is Louis Howell, projectionist at the theatre for 7½ years since coming to Nelson from Marton. Louis spent most of his life in Invercargill. He's married, with three children and when not on duty he's keen on doing anything that takes him outside. He's not a TV fan.

Graham Anderson has been a bank officer at the Canterbury Savings Bank in Nelson for 14 months. He s 17 and was educated at Nelson College. He is a keen Car Club member and likes shooting.

Gardening and following the Rugby are the main leisure-time pursuits of "Jim" Galey, an assistant storeman with Neale and Haddow. Jim has lived all his life in the Nelson district, including Motueka and Takaka. He's married, with two boys and two girls and he's been with the firm about 14 months.

Two shop assistants who love their jobs with Louis Kerr Ltd are Irene Eyles and Barbara Hawker. Irene, left, is 17, and lives at Richmond. She attended Waimea College and has been with the firm a year. Barbara's main interest centres around her fiance, to whom she's been engaged for nearly three months. They hope to marry next year. Barbara is 20 and has been with the firm 5 years. She's keen on basketball (for Nelmea) and, like Irene, enjoys life.
