Apple Peeling Contest

×

Latest in the long line of unusual contests being run throughout the country at the moment is an apple-peeling competition sponsored by the New Zealand Apple and Pear Board. The first heat of the local contest was held recently in Best's Fruit Supply. A variety of implements were used - one family even arrived with a supply of machines, which caused some consternation before the head of the family decided to use more conventional methods. At left, decision made, John Holmes of 2ZN dismantles the machines. At far left is heat winner Tui Vercoe who got an unbroken 10ft 11 in peel from her apple. Core!

Shirley Farrer displays her effort while at right, judge, Dora Barclay, carries on measuring.

Jessie McKay and Jean Elwood (2nd) with 9ft 8ins.

Colleen Gribble is clearly dissatisfied with her effort and Charlotte Batt is all concentration.
Not all could win but, strangely enough, nobody got the pip.
