Prevention is Better

One of the major steps taken to ensure that no disease such as foot and mouth disease is brought into New Zealand has been the establishment of an incinerator building on the reclamation. Into the oil-fired burner goes all the flotsam and garbage that comes off overseas vessels trading at the port. Even the juices from garbage is not overlooked, any liquids being run off to a special container where it is sterilised before being discharged. In reality the building is a quarantine station (note fence around building below) in which supervisor, Ken West-brook, disposes of the rubbish (top and left).
