Marlborough's Great Win

Marlborough and France may not have provided the best Rugby in the world when the two met ay Lansdowne Park, Blenheim but they provided a near-capacity crowd with a tremendous thrill. Marlborough, notwithstanding their strength, were rated as underdogs against the European champions, and there were few of the province's most ardent supporters who would have backed their province to win this first game of the New Zealand tour. So it was that hope turned to incredulity when Marlborough moved to a 24-11 lead in the second half and to a final 24-19 victory. To be perfectly fair, France was not at its best, having just arrived in New Zealand a couple of days before the first game, but nevertheless, the Marlborough team played with fire and purpose, never gave up, and capitalised on some very sloppy un-international play to good purpose. Congratulations, Marlborough, on a great win. We look forward now to next Saturday in the firm belief that Hawke's Bay will have their time cut out retaining the Ranfurly Shield against the Marlborough challenge.

These pix by John R. Sharp show above C. Lacaze drop kicking a penalty goal and at top right, a determined French attack being repelled. At right, half time in the French camp and some French gestures which seem to indicate dissatisfaction.
