Shifting House

We hear tell there's a housing problem in New Zealand, Judging by what we came across earlier this month, the problem also extended to Nelson. But it was an unusual sort of housing problem. It arose when a house was shifted bodily by transporter from the corner of Rutherford and Halifax Streets, to make way for a new building for the General Accessory Company The house had to be shifted to its new site at Wakapuaka, on land which once supported the old Black Horse Hotel. All went well until the transporter's rear wheels became bogged down while the vehicle was using the causeway which was to have held the Nelson railway line to Blenheim. However, a heavy bulldozer managed to get the vehicle clear without mishap and it continued its journey.

Our pix show the house negotiating the Trafalgar Street bridge (above) shortly after leaving its site (right). The two pictures below show the vehicle firmly stuck in the loose soil on the causeway.
