Stoke's Pedestrian Crossing

When the Nelson City Council laid the present pedestrian crossing in the business area, we joined with businessmen and residents of Stoke in condemning the site chosen. Since that time the Stoke Businessmen's Association has complained to the council on several occasions about the crossing and the location of the bus stop in relation to it. The death of an elderly pedestrian on the crossing recently has again focussed attention on it, and we say that, as sited, it is dangerous.

The pictures on this page support this statement.

On the eastern side of the highway, the crossing is recessed about 9ft, making it difficult to see for motorists approaching from the south, and difficult for pedestrians to see the motorists approaching. Our pic above gives some idea of the poor visibility available to motorists and pedestrians alike.

On the eastern side the crossing is obscured by buses using the bus stop. Recently, the Transport Department recommended that this stop should be shifted. The council refused. The situation here is often aggravated by the encroachment of buses into the "keep clear" area. The pic below emphasises the problems facing pedestrians and motorists.
