Old landmark to go

The Bank of New Zealand building in Trafalgar Street, one of Nelson's oldest landmarks, is soon to be demolished. The building has stood on the site always occupied by the Bnz for more than 100 years, and it has now reached the stage where it must be vacated. The earthquake of last month hastened its demise. Cracks have appeared in one of the great columns inside the building and several other major cracks were opened up in the walls. Plans for a new building have been drawn up and these are under review at the moment. The pic above. of the old bank with its distinctive Grecian columns and railings, is well-known to all Nelsonians. At left, can be seen two cracks in one of the big interior columns, and below, a wooden framework has been erected on the inside of the northern wall, where a major crack (inset) has appeared. During the rebuilding, the bank will occupy the old Social Security premises in Hardy Street.
