Murchison shook too

Inangahua and other parts of the West Coast got the major force of the jolt, but many other centres did not escape scot free. Murchison, the centre of the huge 1929 earthquake, fared much better this time, but it still suffered some damage. In Nelson some windows were smashed by the heaving motion of the quake; cracks appeared in some buildings and chimneys were weakened. The pix on this page were taken in Murchison by Alexa Sutherland.

The Catholic Church of Saint Peter Chanel, a concrete structure, will have to come down. Several major cracks in the walls have appeared following the quakes. The church was built in 1922.
