Charlie Cotton

×

In the world of indoor basketball in Nelson and in New Zealand, the name of Charlie Cotton is well known and respected. His record in provincial, island and New-Zealand is an enviable one. The 6ft 2½ in. centre began basketball in 1957 as a member of the Y Boys Club D team. Two years later he forced his way into the Nelson B grade side and in 1960 he began a membership of the Nelson A grade side that has continued till now. South Island honours first came his way in 1962 when he was chosen from the Nelson national tournament team and his potential was recognised the next year when he was chosen in the New Zealand team to tour Taiwan (a tour which did not eventuate). Since that time he has represented New Zealand in 1965 and 1966 and played in the New Zealand invitation team against Oregon University and North Queensland last year. He has also been a member of the South Island team since 1962. This year he has increased his interest by coaching and selecting the Nelson under 18 boys' team. Our pic above shows Charlie concentrating on the basket during a game, and, below, as a member of the ill-fated national team for Taiwan (he's at extreme right).
