lying Bedsteads in Nelson

A visitor to Nelson using Trafalgar Street one day recently could have been excused if he'd turned in panic and rushed round to report a severe outbreak of unidentified flying bedsteads. There was, however, no cause for alarm, for what he'd undoubtedly seen were eight teams pushing, pulling or tugging at eight old hospital beds wherein reposed eight terrified patients, in the funniest race seen for a long time. Object of the contest was to publicise the Braemar garden party and this was accomplished in no uncertain manner. Winner of the event was a Ngawhatu team of Gerry Gale, Bevan Graves, Alan Ward, Rod Thomason and Gary Neave seen above, with deputy-Mayor, Mrs Betsy Eyre. "Sonny" Reid, of Ngawhatu (above) thought the idea a little potty.
