Sporting Roundup

Winter sports are now well under way and in many cases a lead to championship form has already been given. Recently, when we set out on a roundup of sporting fixtures in Nelson, we covered the games seen on these two pages.

On the Rugby front, Rivals, Nelson and Waimea Old Boys had wins over College Old Boys, Wanderers and Stoke respectively. In this round, Stoke surprised by nearly beating Waimea, going down with flags flying 11-10. Rivals were too good for Old Boys and could have scored at least three more tries had the backs not kicked after the Old Boys' line had been breached. Wanderers, a young side with potential, did not give in too easily to the heavier and more experienced Nelson team and were only seven points short of Nelson's winning score.

Players to impress in this round were the Old Boys' lock, A. Little (top left), who scored a good try; Simon McIntyre, Wanderers' left wing, (top right) who impressed with speed and quick thinking; Terry Smith, Waimea side ranker, left, and Old Boys first five-eighths, P. Matakatea, at right, an elusive runner who should go further with more experience. Below is an incident in the Waimea-Stoke encounter towards the end of the game. T. Win has found an opening and is haring for the line. The movement finished at the corner flag.

Soccer

In the one soccer match we saw, Suburbs had an easy 6-1 win over Nelson City to retain the shared lead with United A.
