Progress on Power Sub-Station

The contractors for the extensions to the Stoke sub-station for the New Zealand Electricity Department are nearing the end of their work, but a vast amount of work is still required by departmental staff before the substation is operational. Dominating the area is the huge workshop building (left) still festooned with scaffolding. The biggest job remaining here is the lifting into place of two giant cranes, one of which is shown bottom left. The size of the extension is very impressive, and while the workshop building dominates the whole area, no less notable are the giant oil circuit breakers, five sets of which are located in the new site. Each of these sets contains 6000 gallons of oil, so that the whole of the new system will contain 30,000 gallons of oil. One of the sets is shown below. Their size can be gauged from the comparative size of the man.
