The Old Boys Stakes

While we can't say that the old boys of Nelson College put the present pupils to shame with their running in the 100 yds handicap event, we can surely say that they were no less enthusiastic, as the photo above shows. Eighteen starters puffed, and in many cases, laughed their way up the straight to the ever-receding finishing line (the line officials moved around the track). One of the most enthusiastic runners was the Bishop of Nelson (Bishop Sutton), whom we have ringed. Winner of the event was Wellington old boy, John Wilson, who was so far in front he ran out of our picture. Nevertheless, we caught up with him as he handed in his winning marble at the finish table (left)
