The Stoke Cricket Club's stranglehold on the Nelson senior cricket championship was broken this year by Toi Toi-United. The two teams were almost neck and neck as they approached the last match of the season (Stoke was ·67 pts ahead), but Stoke could manage no more than a first innings loss to Athletic-Old Boys while Toi Toi-United scored a 7-wicket win over Wakatu. It was the club's first victory in 10 years. Stoke had won the title in eight of the last 10 years. The team was, back: Mike Hallerby, Robin Lowans, Ernie Adams, Ross Herron, Geoff Smith, Martin Herrick. Front: Brian Reiersen, Graeme Lowans, Rod Sowman (capt), Brian Carey and Paul Smith.
