Take Your Keys and Stop a Thief

The incidence of car theft throughout New Zealand has been mounting steadily in recent years and will, no doubt, continue to mount while car owners aid the thieves by leaving their cars unlocked and the keys in the ignition. This fact was highlighted in Nelson recently when three young men were apprehended with a car they had stolen. The car (above) was taken from Collingwood Street and driven to Okiwi Bay where the interior was stripped and the car painted. Two other cars stolen recently are those below. One has been badly damaged. The Hillman was taken from the Moutere district and recovered at Pangatotara, and the Vauxhall taken from Nelson. A point of interest: about 70% of cars stolen are left unlocked and the keys left in the ignitions.
