The Flying Bug

About six weeks ago a young pupil of Waimea College, Douglas Young, approached officials of the Nelson Aero Club with a curious request. Could he help around the place – wash aircraft, sweep the floor, make the tea, in fact do anything that would allow him to be close to aeroplanes. The club agreed, and, in return for this considerable help, promised to give this keen youngster, free flying tuition. The boy, Douglas Young, can be seen at the club rooms doing his chores every night of the week, and he's already had one hour's tuition and he's looking forward to the remaining 15 hours dual and 25 hours solo flying he's going to have to do to get his student's licence. At top, Douglas washes down an aircraft, and, below, he receives instruction from club instructor, Kevin Purcell.
