Radio Transmitters' Field Day

For 18 hours during the weekend of February 24/5, the radio waves over New Zealand (and even further afield) were cluttered to an almost impossible degree by amateur radio transmitters seeking each other. They were competing in the annual field contest of their organisation (N. Z. Amateur Radio Transmitters). The object of the contest was to contact, on two stations (on 80 and a 40-metre bands), as many stations as possible in a given time. The Nelson branch operated its stations from open country at Mapua.

At left, technician John Dunn rigs an aerial for the 40-metre band station, while above, Bob Manley makes contact. Below left, Jane Gordon provides Bob with a welcome cuppa and below, Rob Martin tries his luck.
