No 13 Newstead

One of Nelson's finest and oldest buildings is now serving as a part of Nelson's educational system. The house, set in spacious lawns and lovely trees, is "Newstead", and is part of the Central School. "Newstead" was built in 1855 by W. B. Maiben, and in 1856 it was bought by the trustees of the Nelson Trusts Funds as a residence for the first headmaster of Nelson College. When a schoolroom was added nearby, it was here that Nelson College had its very humble beginnings. Two years later, when the college was moved to its present site, "Newstead" was bought by Dr Monro and in 1864 he combined the buildings. Dr Monro, twice Speaker in the House of Parliament, was knighted by Queen Victoria.
