Festival Games
Cyclists dominated the Nelson Festival Games just before the New Year. Fields for most of the athletics events were small and there were comparatively few contests for them. Feature attraction at the games was the appearance of the two West German cyclists, Karl-Heinz Henrichs and Klaus Kobusch, who raced against a New Zealand team in a "test". The non-arrival of Canterbury cyclist, John Cleary, because of aircraft delays, gave Nelson cyclist, Gary Clinton (above) his big chance when he was selected for the New Zealand team on the track. Nor did he disgrace himself—he lost one of the sprints by a foot and a second by a length.
Watching the start of one of the sprints: Ray Harris, Ken Rowe and John Collett
Taking things easy before the start of one of the track events: Tony Hale, Roger Barton and, really at case, Keith Hitchcock
In difficult wind conditions John Dixon (extreme left) ran a good 4min 14.8 sec mile.
Dixon finishes very strongly
Warming up: Grant Nelson and Michael Collins
