Historic Homes No. 12: "Brookside"

×

Snuggled among trees and shrubs and backing on to the Brook stream is one of Nelson's oldest and most historic residences. It is "Brookside", a home which, although renovated in recent years, still retains many of the features it had when first built about 1840. Possibly, "Brookside's" greatest claim to fame was that it was for about eight years the home of Nelson and West Coast explorer and surveyor, Thomas Brunner. The house is of cob construction and little of the interior has been altered. It has had a number of owners, but early ownership has been difficult to trace. In 1862 it was bought from Mr Hodgson by Captain W. D. Cloete and he leased it to Brunner. In 1890 it was bought by Arthur Tatton, a dentist and other owners have been Mr Sadd (1920), Mr Coltman, Lt/Col Bissitt (1928), Mr J. C. Shelley (1950) and Mr E. L. Upton (1962). Last month it was sold again to Mr and Mrs H. Peters.
