At The Mardi Gras
Each Christmas vacation, the Mardi Gras, organised and run by Nelson Jaycee, almost signals the end of the holiday programme. It is, undoubtedly, the climax to a very full programme of events. Certainly no effort is spared to make it so. This year's Mardi Gras was a huge success. A tremendous crowd filed through the check points and appeared to be enjoying themselves. Ten o'clock closing appeared to have little effect on the behaviour of the crowd and the presence of two police dogs and handlers would have been enough to prevent any trouble. But none was there and the whole evening passed without incident. Possibly takings at some of the stalls were down. Reports indicated that the public was fairly loath to part with its cash. Pop singer Lee Grant was King of the Mardi Gras and during the evening Miss Pat Collins was elected to be his Queen of the Mardi Gras. A great line-up of pop singers and artists kept a big crowd enthralled outside the council chambers, and the 2XN talent quest also had its share of the big crowd Winner of the quest, and $100, was Joseph Paul (above).
