The Maitai Boat Race
"Can I canoe you down the river ....." So go the words of an old song, but on the Maitai River just before the Mardi Gras, these words held a practical meaning for the host of boats and canoes of all shapes and sizes which competed in the first (and we hope, not last) Maitai river races.
The start of the primary school race
"To blazes with the paddle, it's easier to kick"
Winner of the open event, Kevin Shea, had to swim the last few yards.
Younger winners: Colin Chisholm (primary), Peter Chivers (intermediate) and Douglas Young (canoes).
The launching (or, the moment of truth)
A tyre tube made a simple but very effective craft
