Death of a Bluegum

The huge bluegum tree on the Richardson property on the corner of Princes Drive and Richardson Street was felled by a chain saw last month. The tree was the last of many that filled the grounds of this old property. The big gum was a notable landmark, visible from many points in Nelson, and it took some bringing down, but finally the combined power of two bulldozers wrote finis to its long life. At left bushmen are working on the cut and, above, the old tree begins to topple. Squatting on the stump, Richard Richardson discusses the job with Ken Johnston (middle), who felled the tree (below left).
