Surf-boarding at Tahunanui Beach

When the sun is shining and the air is calm, the sea rolls on to Tahunanui Beach in a very calm and lazy manner. Certainly not the sort of seas which the surf-board riders like to see. But on occasions, usually when a stiff northerly is blowing and there's a nip in the air, some decent-sized rollers converge on the beach. This is the time, when most swimmers seek warmer conditions, that the young surfboard riders come into their own. The sport, an extremely popular one throughout New Zealand, has taken on here in Nelson and the young people have formed a club, with headquarters in part of the old canteen building on the beach. On one cold, blustery day, we found them out in force.
