Young Biologists Visit Stephen's Island

Nine sixth form pupils from Nelson College for Girls and Waimea College made a study visit to Stephens Island, that unique island off D' Urville Island that is home to the tuatara and the even more rare Hamilton's Frog. Mr G. Toop, a teacher of Nelson, took these photographs of the visit.

A group, comprising Helen Kitt, Mr Eric Worrell (director of the Australian Reptile Park, Sydney), Vicki Mathison, Mr Brian Bell, senior conservator with the wild life division of the Internal Affairs Department, and Diana Reid, examine a fine tuatara.

Here, 12 years ago, was sighted the extremely rare Hamilton's Frog (it is not even known if it exists today, but if so, it would probably be at this site-the only one in the world).
