Motueka-Nelson Relay

The Wellington A harrier team streaked away from all opposition at the half-way mark in the annual Motueka-Neison relay and won by the big margin of 3 min 2 sec- from Greymouth. the relay, the main event on the Nelson harrier calendar, drew a record field of 25 teams. Nelson teams were unplaced in the first three placings, but the A team of the Nelson Athletic, Harrier and Cycling Club recorded its fastest time to take fourth place. wellington established an early lead, but at the half-way mark it was the strong Greymouth team that had a short lead, due mainly to a lap record-breaking performance by marathon star, Uave McKenzie. However, Wellington went away shortly after the baton change and increased its lead with almost every cnange thereafter. Other Nelson teams finished 10th, 15th, 21st and 24th. A Marlborough team was 14th. (Pix by Peter Savage).
