Marlborough Retains Shield

The Seddon Shield, brought to Nelson by Marlborough for Nelson's 1967 challenge, returned to Blenheim with the team. But for 60 of the 80 minutes during which it was at stake, neither the Marlborough team nor its supporters were able to prophesy the outcome with any degree of confidence. Nelson surprised even its most ardent supporters with the verve and spirit of its forward play, and we have no hesitation in saying that the tackling was the best seen for many a long year. Nelson held a 3-nil lead until well into the second half, when a missed tackle (the first until then) gave Marlborough the equalising points, and 10 minutes later, a revitalised side scored again to put the issue beyond doubt. But it was certainly a heartening display by Nelson. Congrats to Marlborough and to Ray Sutherland on his well-merited selection for the South Island team.

Helem played an outstanding game and kicked Nelson's only points.

Clarke dives over in the corner a pace ahead of Terry Julian who came across very fast on cover defence.

Shield referee, Mr J. Logan, had to leave the field after injuring a leg in a collision with a player.

Marlborough fullback L. Spark had a day off with his goal kicking but in all other respects was outstanding.

NO place this for the faint of heart - a very loose ruck and players diving into it from all directions

Nelson five-eighths Gary Thomas just beats R. May with his kick.

But May this time eludes a Nelson tackier (on ground) and Bruce Smith coming up on the right
