Historic Homes No.7: "Tilling Down"

×

Old photographs taken from Locking Street towards Snow's Hill seldom fail to include a two-storey home with a verandah running round two sides of it. This home, built in 1854 for Thomas Rake, is now the home of Mrs K. O. Ryder. Its second owner was Sarah Snow, after whom Snow's Hill was named. Mrs Ryder is the twelfth owner of a property which once extended over much of Snow's Hill to Van Dieman Street, it was originally named "Glen Forsa" by C. H. Clark in 1905, but was renamed "Tilling Down" by Mrs Ryder in 1964. It is of weatherboard construction with a slate roof and lathe and plaster interior walls. It has been added to but not modernised and has retained its original character.
