March, 1968, is an important month for Marlene Gillman, a cosmetician in West's Pharmacy. That's the month Marlene is to be married. She's been at the pharmacy for two years now, but before that time was in Auckland and the West Coast, where she was raised. "Just driving," is her main hobby, although she's interested in swimming and sewing also.

When we first came to Nelson nearly seven years ago, we thought the Rhythmaires dance band was the swingingest we'd heard. The man behind the band was Garth Simpson, senior telegraphist with the Nelson Post Office. Garth has been with the department 28 years, 22 of which he's spent as a telegraphist. He's got two boys at school, Craig at Nelson intermediate and Terry at primary school. His main interests are angling and (of course), music.

A fairly recent newcomer to Nelson is Mrs Prue Harp, a special class teacher at Auckland Point School and the mother of two boys. The family came to Nelson from Te Awamutu last year. Prue confesses to being a tele addict and a sun worshipper and also a keen swimmer.

Somehow Helen Brand just manages to exist between marching seasons. Helen, a 17-year-old telegram delivery girl at the Nelson Post Office, finds the winter a drag, and she's only really happy when she's marching with the Kotare team. In the winter she plays records (marches, Helen?)

Spending as much time on the water as he does, we weren't surprised to find that Ron Henderson takes to the bush, or to the air, when he returns from the sea. He certainly doesn't fish during his leisure hours. Fishing is strictly business for Ron. who's skipper of the Kotuku, and who's been fishing now for 20 years in Marlborough Sounds and Nelson waters. So, when it's home from the sea, it's into the bush after pig, or into an aero club plane, for Ron.
