Off to England to get married in three weeks is Gail Roper, a 17-year-old shop assistant at the Crysal Milk Bar. Gail, who was a hair-dresser before she moved to the milk bar, is keen on all sport. She is a judo enthusiast and holds ' the orange belt. She was educated at Waimea College.

When it cones to cycling and cycles, Ian Ward, a mechanic with Winn Bros, knows what he's talking about. Ian has followed the sport for over 10 years and as well as winning several cycling titles as a member of the Nelson Athletic and Cycling Club, he has represented Nelson in the sport. Ian is married and is expecting to become a father any day now (if the happy event hasn't already occurred).

One of the most interesting and unusual jobs done by women in the district is undertaken most days by Heather Oxley. She drives the mini-bus between Nelson and the Glen and Hira, when she's not looking after her husband and 9-months-old daughter. Heather came to New Zealand from Sydney and has lived in Nelson for two years.

Every day, Jennifer Russ leaves her parents' farm at Appleby and comes into Nelson to take up her duties as receptionist at the New Zealand Forest Service. Jennifer has held the position now for 18 months. She's single, is 18, and her main interests lie in the activities of the Open Brethren Youth Club.

Being the drummer in a dance band used to keep Raymond Neal very busy, but since he shifted from Auckland to Nelson six months ago, his family duties have pushed skinbeating into a back seat. Raymond is 20, is married, with a three-months-old boy. He's lubritorium attendant at the Maitai Service Station. When not at work he's interested in "mucking about" with cars and cricket.
