Historic Homes No. 4

The Stead Home

×

One of Nelson's earliest homes is this one in Nayland Road, the property of Mr and Mrs W. B. Stead. It is believed to be one of the oldest houses still inhabited in New Zealand. The home, a cob and weatherboard structure, was built by a man named Holland in 1842/3. It changed hands several times up to the time that Mr Stead acquired it in 1912. One of its previous owners was the Hon. Mr Reeves, a member of the Legislative Council. When Mr Stead bought the property he planted 20 acres of land in orchard and the property is still worked today.
