Down the motueka, by raft

×

Isn't it funny the way things start! You've only got to come up with something like "anything you can do I can do better", and the next thing you know it's a national event and talk of teams in the Olympics. Well, that's about the way the first Motueka River raft race began. A friendly challenge between seasonal workers and growers and the next thing - 10 entries. We hear now that it's likely to become an annual event. Good thing if it does. The more fun the better for everyone. The "race" was from the Baton bridge to the Peninsula bridge and it was won by Teague McNab and Don Wills. Second place went to the piratical crew of Colin Gardiner, Trevor Hamilton, Mervyn Heath, Noel Beattie and Alan Gardiner., it was nearly a case of "man overboard". For general lines, no craft matched the one at and we strongly suspect that the supercargo carried on the raft of Martin Holmes, Dick Parker and Laurie Barnes, might have contributed to their failure to take a major placing.
