Nelson RETAINS MAHAR CUP

Nelson scooped the pool in the Mahar Cup athletics and cycling meeting at Trafalgar Park. For the fourth successive year it retained the cup and added a polish to this performance by retaining the McDonnell Cup (most points athletics) and Jones Cup (most points cycling). The competition among the Seddon Shield districts teams was strong throughout and the finishes and performances were tight and enthralling. The most shattering experience of the day was the manner in which national cross-country representative Eddie Gray, of Greymouth, shattered his own three-mile record, and the equally impressive display of national marathon title-holder, Dave McKenzie, also Greymouth, who came home second, also under the old record time.
