Introducing...

Bruce higgs, a storeman at E. W. Pidgeon and Co, is often "tyred" (rotten pun). That, of course, is what comes of working in a tyre store. As was to be expected, Bruce is keenly interested in all things motoring, especially gokarting. Living at Harakeke, Bruce drives 52 miles to and from work every day. He was educated at Motueka High.

In the toll room of the Post Office we chanced upon a family affair. Seated, is Nola carter, and that's her hubby, GARY, and her sister, Lana Tomkies. And they all work in the toll room. All are West Coasters. Nola and Lana came from the Fox Glacier and Gary from Greyraouth. They've been in Nelson four years. For Nola, badminton and swimming hold most interest, but not so Gary who's keen on all sport. Lana is interested in swimming, music, travelling and dancing.

Spotted heading home with the family shopping and young Jamie, was Mrs "pete" allam, of Annesbrook. "Pete" has two children (the other, a girl, is Beverley, who is at Nayland College in her first year), and is a music and gardening (particularly roses) enthusiast. Jamie is in Std 4 at Tahunanui School.

You could call Tom cater a "community man". Tom, a postie at present on the Annesbrook run, brought his family (five children) from Collingwood eight months ago. Before, that, he was a miner at the Puponga mine. Tom's interests are community ones. At Collingwood he was secretary of, or held an executive position on, more organisations than we have room to mention. He was a member of the Coilingwood Fire Brigade for 12 very happy years, and he has joined the Stoke brigade.

Getting his first taste of the big, wide, wonderful world outside the classroom, is Bruce smart, who has just taken up an apprenticeship, as a carpenter-joiner, with Fairline Builders. He's keen on shooting, motor-cycling, hockey and joinery work.
