Larry's Rebels In Church

Churches are concerned these days that the world is getting ahead of them, but many would question that the way to attract worshippers is to invite pop groups to take part.

The usual evening congregation of about 40 was increased to over 300 at the Birkenhead Methodist Church recently when the minister, the Rev B. Hilder, teamed up with a leading pop group, Larry's Rebels, for the evening service.

The group sang protest songs and played modernised versions of hymns.

"The aim of this service is to show the joys and certainties of the Church today through an idiom of today," said the minister.

You can almost hear the sizzle as chef Ernie Swan cooks thick sirloin steaks—1100 of them altogether—for the Auckland Connoisseurs' Club. Aim of the club is to foster appreciation of fine New Zealand food and wine, and Hellaby's supplied sirloin steaks of the type which they airfreight to some of the top hotels and restaurants in the Pacific.

No, they didn't buy her at a supermarket. The young woman in the bag, Miss Virginia Foote, is simply demonstrating the strength of a new type of checkout bag made by the N.Z. firm of United Empire Box. "Strong men" in the picture are Warwick Rapley (left) and Ryland Johnston.
