Pubs Are Not What They Used To Be

The old days of the kegs on the counter are gone. Today it's chromium, carpets and comfort. We took a wander around some of the local hostelries recently to put on record some of the improvements being affected. In some cases, these are quite extensive. We wondered if all this talk of an extension of hours might have something to do with it.

The Bush Tavern in Grove Street has had its main bar and lounge bar extended into the new building at left and is now the most up-to-date in Nelson city. Improvements cost about £8000.

Massive steel girders form the framework around which will be built new bar and living accommodation at the Metropolitan Hotel. The additional accommodation will be on the second floor. Improvements will cost over £20,000.
