Taupo's First Visit To Nelson

The New Zealand Shipping Co's new cargo ship Taupo, on her maiden voyage from England, called at Port Nelson last month and loaded meat and apples. All the latest navigational and safety aids are incorporated in this beautiful ship. Of major interest were the Hallen swinging derricks and hydraulically-operated hatches. Each derrick is operated by only one man. Statistics? She's 11,000 tons, was launched in 1965, is 527ft overall and will carry her load and crew of 50 officers and men at a service speed of 20 knots.
