Tasman Road Reconstruction

The completion of the reconstruction of the Appleby-Jubilee Bridge main road is being brought a stage closer with the letting of contracts by the Waimea County Council recently for two new sections of the road. When we visited the area recently we found heavy machines working on a section of roadway between Mariri and Tasman. They are straightening the road, cutting across tidal flats and only touching at brief points the existing roadway. When completed this road will provide users with a shorter and faster link with Motueka.

The big question is - what next? Will it go through Rabbit Island?

From a huge borrow pit the spoil is lifted by giant carry-alls and rushed to the new roadhead where it is dumped and formed

The carry-alls, able to carry something like 15 yards of metal at each filling, are loaded with the help of a dozer at the borrow .pit.

The existing road, which turns here to the right, will eventually go straight through.
